How to invite wife or spouse to Italy

Its really difficult to bring your spouse to Italy when you come here. Generaly, for wife family visa is required and for that Entry clearance certificate "Nulla osta per ricongiungimento familiare" from the local police "Questura" To get nullaosta issued, you need hell amount of documents. First of all You do not know Italian and if you have to inquire in Italian, then gone case..., Italian beurocracy is similar to India. I am here for two years and still find problem.

In this article I am going to describe the simplest way to bring your wife/ husband/ spouse / friends or parents to Italy for maximum 90 days on tourist visa (visto tourismo)

Here is the list of Documents required.

In addition to the application form, valid passport and recent photograph, You need the following docs.

1. letter of invitation (from sponsor)
Download Invitation letter  and complete it.

2. Attested copy of all pages of your passort, attested photo copy of permesso di soggiorno, should be valid during your spouse entry, if not then the attested photo copy of expired permit and poste italiana ricevuta.
Attested means, attested from your local commune or tribunale. Ask you commune for the procedure. You can find some agents doing this for 100-200 EUR.

If you are in India to bring your spouse, then VFS-italy can attest this document by showing them the oroginal.

3. Medical insurance ( 30,000 Euros) / Overseas travel insurance
It will cost around 3000 INR for 90 days, you can ICICI lombard overseas travel insurance
http://www.icicilombard.com
You can calculate the amount before buying the insurance. It is calculated per day basis.

You can buy it online from anywhere in the world with your credit card, also for your spouse, just pretend that your spouse is buying in India.

4. Bank Guarantee from the sponsor.
Bank Guarantee is "Fidejussione bancaria" in italia, ask you bank if they are ready to give, You should have deposit of 3000 EUR per person in bank. The charges may very from 100-500 EUR.

Alternative of this is the Currency conversion endorsement on the passport of your spouse, you can ask any travel agent, and they can endorse for you or your spouse after taking 500-1000 INR. This is good option. If you are inviting for only few days, then better to go for real endorsement

5. Marriage certificate for Mumbai consulate (need not to be translated) and endorsement of spouse name on each other passport. This is must.

Your Wife or spouse in India must supply the following.

6. Covering letter, detailing purpose of trip, duration of stay and outlining the travel itinerary.
7. Flight ticket
8. One year Bank statement. (Open the account as soon as possible, if your spouse does not have it)
9. If they are working, then letter from the employer. If they are business man or house wife, then they can mention this in the covering letter.

Simplest way
If you are in Italy then Just sent the
1. Completely filled and signed invitation letter,
2. attested copy of passport, PDS and ricevuta(if permit is expired) from your side. (Attested from your local commune)

Ask your spouse in India to prepare
1. fill the visa form taken from the vfs-italy, (if there is a mistake, vfs will correct)
2. prepare the covering letter, you can prepare behalf of them
3. buy the icicilombard insurance by visiting any ICICI bank, (you can aslo buy online from here and send along will all other documents.)
4. Prepare the bank statement, need not to have lot of money,
5. Endorsement of around 2800 EUR on each passport by contacting any travel agent, (1500 for one and half months, for 90 days its 2716.68 Euro)
6. Confirmed ticket booking.
7. Employer NOC if they are working.

After having these documents ready, take the appointment and visit vfs italy, (you can also take the appointment for them online.)

I hope these documents are enough, If they require more documents, they will let your spouse know. they are very cooperative.

I have experience inviting my wife from Delhi,

they asked for my wife bank account statement even she is a house wife, I do not know why, I was lucky that she has 6 month old account with 5000 INR and only single transaction, they accepted that.

I think this is the simplest and cheapest way to call your parents or your spouse to invite to Italy.

Some rules are different for Mumbai / kolkatta consulate and Delhi embassy

If you have any question, please leave a comment, I would be very happy to answer.

  5. Hi Vikas,
Thanks for posting this information.I hope it will be of immense help to me. Kindly clear my doubt whether we need to give the proof for stay also or is it not very important. second, as my kid (less than two year onld) will also come with my wife so what will be the amount of bank guarentee.

    with warm regards,
    Arvind

    ReplyDelete
  6. No proof of address is required, as you are sending the attested copies of PDS.

The amount depends on the number of days spend in Italy (max 90 days). Actually I do not know how much money is needed in the case of child, but for your kid and your wife, I request you to take Fidejussione bancaria.

You can check the Table for calculating means of support required to enter Italian national territory for tourism at the given link, (copy and paste)

  7. Hello Dear, I have a confusion regarding attestation of my passport and stay permit. can you please tell me what is this local commune or tribunale.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Like Rome has commne di roma http://www.comune.roma.it/

so you must be having comune of your city/town

Tribunale is the local trial court, like tribunale di torino, milano etc

The attestation is must if you are not physically present there.

  9. Dear Vikas,
My wife and kid got tourist visa. thanks for your help. Now as we are preparing for our flight to italy I need to ask few things. I have not taken any Fidejussione Bancaria for my family. Kindly tell me wether we can face any problem during immigration at airport. second thing, kindly advice what documents immigration officials can ask for?
    Wirh best regards,
    Arvind

  10. Dear Arvind

Since the invitee (you) are there along with them, there would not be any problem, I suppose. You are the financial proof and you do not need idejussione Bancaria.

However keep the copy of all docs that you submitted to get the visa for your family along with your work contract, bank details etc, if you have.

Happy journey to Italy, please leave your comment once you are back here.

    Boun viaggio

  11. Dear Vikas,
I am worried because I have not kept the invitation letter for my family from my post-doc advisor. This letter was attested by local comune in italy. Is that document very important?

    ReplyDelete

  12. Dear Arvind,
You should have kept copy of every doc.

If you don't have that letter than don't take any tension, you can always say that you are taking them with you. Don't tell that they are invited by your professor. Since its not written anywhere on the visa.

Anyway, keep the copy of isurance policy.. and docs related to your financial and residential status.

    Which flight are you taking??

  15. Hi Vikas,
My husband is in Italy. Myself n my son (15 months old) are planning to join my husband in family reunion visa(if possible) or atleast planning to visit him in tourist visa. Anyway he is coming to India by June 2010. Till now his permit of stay is not ready.

VFS Italy is asking for a no objection to carry my son while travelling to rome(Affidavit) that has to be attested by commune in rome.

Could you plz help me in this.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Since both of the parents are not travelling with the baby, no objection certificate/affidavit is required.

your husband in coming in june, it is better to apply for visa once he is there, I mean you, your husband and son are together during visa application. It will also reduce the number of docs that you need.

For affidavit, I don't know the exact format, ask him to contact the commune/court, they will help him with the format.

Let me know If I can help you further.

Thanks for all the information you shared in this article.
I am in Italy on work permit from last two month, I applied for stay permit and have its reciept, will it work to invite my wife and son on tourist visa.
Or if it will not work, I want them to visit Italy atlest for two month, will it work if she will apply by herself as a tourist without mentioning i am here.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I think you can apply with receipt. I assume that you have not received your first PDS and still have valid visa.

Sent the following attested by your local commune.
    1. Invitation letter
    2. Attested copy of receipt.
    3. Attested copy of all pages of passport.
    4. Attested copy of Valid Visa (attach it wil invitation letter and receipt)
    5. Bank statement

The other docs you can arrange

    ReplyDelete
  33. Hi Vikas,
Thanks for your quick response, yes I did not recieved PDS but have valid VISA till March-12.

I don’t have bank account in Italy, my salary is paid by India. Is the bank statement you mentioned should be from Italy, or Indian bank statement with joint account will work.
Another point as she might travel alone with my 10 month old son, from where I should make an affidavit.

    ReplyDelete
  34. you should have brought her your son along with you on tourist visa.

Now I advise you to go personally to India during this summer holidays and bring them with you. It would be easier for you do apply for tourist visa if you are there in India.

  38. pls reply urgently.......

    ReplyDelete
  39. Hi,

Your husband needs to apply for nulla osta for family reunion from Italy. This process could take very long time, could be upto 6-9 months.

The immediate solution is that you travel with him on tourist visa.

    ReplyDelete
  40. can i travel with him on work permit or stay visa?dnt know much about this.the problem is my husband"s firm travel department also does nt know everything correctly other wise he shouldnt have applied.neways thanx for the help...

    ReplyDelete
  41. yes you can, if nulla osta is arranged by employer as you mentioned. This comes under "nulla osta per FAMILIARI AL SEGUITO" There are some qualifying conditions.

Please keep in your mind that If your husband and you are in India, then employer can apply for nulla osta but if your husband reached Italy, then he should apply for that. The first one is much simpler than your husband himself applying for that.

Both the nulla osta are different and different docs are required.

The rules keep on changing, so better you cantact the embassy to know the updated rules.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Scenario is, nulla osta is approved but the delegated person in Italy cannot collect it until next week bcoz of some legal issue related to residence proof. Now my husband may travels to Italy next week. So question is: Is same Nulla Osta and approval for dependents will be valid and can be used for dependent visa application event after he leaves for Italy?

    ReplyDelete
  43. agent is saying ration card is required for visa application, but now a days ration card is un common, d0 u knw is it mandatory doc or optional, pls rply

    ReplyDelete
  44. I think, it should be find to obtain the visa even your husband left to Italy. Nulla osta is valid for 6 months from the date of issue.

You must supply all the docs asked by embassy in valid format.

  45. thanx vikas for all the help............

Please book a confirmed return ticket before your next term starts and also buy an insurance for the whole trip.

    1. Italian procedure is quite lengthy, it depends in which commune your husband is residing. So he will have the better idea how much it can take. But I am sure that it can take from 90 days to one year to complete the whole process. If you wish to go early then go there on tourist visa for 90 days before you get other supportive documents and do the necessary translation and verification of the documents.

I tried to get tourist visa one month back and the process got failed. Now I am willing to try the process again. But this time I am planning to get invitation letter from my friend who is in Austria and will apply to Austria embassy for tourist visa. So in case, if I get visa and I enter in EU via Austria and then travel to Italy and try to do family cohesion ........would it be legal and is there any possibility that my application for family cohesion will get accepted? because i would not be going to Italy directly and the invitation will not be from my wife.

    1. What was the reason your tourist visa application failed?

If your friend invites, you will never get tourist visa for 90 days. It is likely that you might get single entry visa for few days.

As far I understand, In order to qualify for Family cohesion you must arrive to Trento together with your Family, that is not the cast with you.

If you really want to come here as a family, then I advice you to come with Family reunion visa, although it might be time taking and expensive process but the success rate is very high.

    2. Hello vicky,

Thanks a lot for your reply.

The reason for failed tourist visa process was that I failed to get Invitation letter from my friend on the Letter Head. He is working as a researcher and do not have his own letter head and the institute refused to give any kind of invitation letter because invitation was not from the institute. I showed 20 days travel plan with hotel booking and travel itinerary so all the documents were ok and the only problem was invitation letter was not on the letter head.
Now I am thinking to get invitation from my wife directly with all the required documents and bank guarantee. I hope this will take less time compared to family reunion process.

      Waiting for your suggestion.

      Thanks a lot again!!

      regards,

    3. your case was simple and you made it complicated. Yes, please get invitation and guarantee from your wife. I assume you are employed India. You need to show that you are going to meet your wife for summer vacation and come back to join your employment and you don't have any intention to settle there.

I am sure that you have all the necessary documents to support your application.

    5. Yes, it could be from any Italian bank.

    6. Your wife can apply for Fideiussione bancaria from any issuing bank. Check with other banks. Your wife need to make a corresponding deposit to that bank and they will issue the bank guarantee subject meeting their conditions.

  68. Hello,
I am a PhD student in Italy. I am planning to bring my mother here on a tourist visa for 90days. My question is regarding the bank guarantee that they ask for. I would like to endorse currency for the stipulated days on my moms visa. So my question is after endorsing the currency on my moms passport and after receiving the visa hopefully, may I convert the currency back in India before leaving to Italy with my mom. Because I would sustain her expenses from the PhD scholarship that I get every month from my PhD and not from the endorsed currency. The endorsement is only for the bank guarantee because getting "Fidejussione bancaria" is not easy for me. Awaiting your reply. Many thanks.

    1. From which embassy jurisdiction you are going to apply?
      Is you mom working?
Will you be travelling with her or she will be travelling alone?
In which schengen country she will be landing?

  69. Going to apply from Italian consulate, Mumbai.
No,she is not working......she is a home maker.
Yes I will accompany her from India. Will go once she gets her visa.
And she would land in Italy with me.
Actually as of now I had already endorsed around 2800 euros on her passport as a bank guarantee. I dont know if that would work.
I mean wondering incase they ask for "Fidejussione bancaria" as a mandatory document from Italy, then how much amount should I show?
    Thanks for ya reply.

    1. Don't worry, as you have the permesso di soggiorno, and your mom will be travelling with you, In this case the Italian immigration will not bother to ask you/her about the money.

Hi Vikas. The Blog you maintained and the Information you gave is very helpful to us.I am staying in Naples and I am planning to bring my wife here with short term visa.I have one doubt about endorsement of passport. what it exactly mean.Is this money is secure deposit or we have to pay. Please clarify it.

    3. Foreign exchange endorsement on the passport and receipt is a proof that you have purchases a foreign currency to support availability of adequate financial means of the applicant during stay in Italy. Try for fideiussione bancaria first, if you can't do it then got for currency endorsement.

  71. Hi Vicky,

Firstly, let me thank you for this wonderful post as you clarify to everyone the needs.

My case is articulated as follow:

I am a ph.D student at University di verona I have a scholarship from the University which basically 1000 euro a month. I am married and I want to bring my wife to Italy. Is the money I got would be enough to enable me to invite my wife?

I wonder what exactly should I provide? do I really need to have 3000 euro in my account? because I cant save much.

Can you please clarify to me in more details. BTW, I AM FROM YEMEN.

    Thank you so much

  72. Hi Viaks,
Now here i would like to tell you that after 2009 family cohesion for non eu people stopped by Italian gov. The reason I am telling you is that I arrived in Italy (one n half weeks back) on 90 days tourist visa. Before my arrival, my wife, who is already working in Italy, kept all the papers/documents (required for cohesion) ready. We went to questura and we got answer that the practice got stopped after 2009. We were pretty much sure that cohesion is possible because before I start visa processing in india my wife went to CISL (agency who helps foreigners to process their applications) and CISL told that cohesion is possible and after entering in Italy we found that the agency was not aware of new rules. So now the only way is to apply for reunion which might take 180 days or less than that and I have to go back to India after expiry of tourist visa. If you know any other way/s, plz do write back.
    Regards,

    1. Yes it is quite likely that your visa might be rejected due to your young age and unemployment.
Try to arrange those documentation as suggested by the agents. If you can not then I suggest you to still make your application to see the outcome.

  76. Dear Vikash ji,
I receive Italian VISA for the research purpose (with work permit) for the PhD degree in Italy. Now, I want to take my wife together and I want to apply for the defendant VISA for her. Here in Embassy they are telling me to submit nulla Osta for my wife. I heard that I can give to any my university personnel(who is having italian citizen)mandate (authority for the clearance process for my wife).
So, my query is how can I send letter of attorney to university personnel so that he/she can process as behalf of me to get the clearance letter for my wife in Italy. Is there any sample format to give mandate for the clearance process on behalf of me to the Italian citizen?

  77. Dear Vikas,

I am a PhD scholar here in Italy and I wanted to bring my wife here with me next time when I visit India, by then I will have my stay permit. Is it possible to bring her in Tourist Visa for 90 days and then extend it here in Italy for 1 year or 3 years ? If so please tell me how... and one more thing, you told here that forex can endorse 2700 or 3000 Euro even if I exchange just 200-300 Euro... can you plz explain that... I didn't get it ! One more important question... someone told me that a simple court "marriage certificate" is not valid outside, I need to "Legalize" it by state Govt. and then legalize it from "MEA" of my state and then get it translated and finally attested by Consulate General... this whole procedure of legalization only, takes a long time... 1 - 2 months... but you didn't mention it.

  78. Hi,

I need help and it seems that I don't have much time. I am a PhD scholar in a University of Naples, Italy. I arrived here from India on June, 2013 and my interview to get stay permit is also over next month I'll get my permit to stay. Presently I am staying in a hostel but in the early November I will be shifted to a private apartment.

I am going back to India on January 2014 to bring my wife here. I needed to know how can I do that. I mean she will be ready with all her documents along with translated and apostilled marriage certificate and will apply for the visa but I have come to know that "Nulla Osta" is a must to bring the spouse.. but it takes 6 months and I have only 3 months left ! Does that mean that its impossible to bring her ?

She is interested to join PhD here and if not then she will join a project with a Professor, but thats not so sure, so for the time being you can assume its just family reunion and she will be staying with me for at least 365 days !

Now is it possible to bring her on a tourist visa of 90 days and then convert it to a long term stay visa ? In that case will I be able to convert the visa within 3 months, because Nulla Osta will still take at least 6 months ! And what do I need to convert tourist visa to long term visa and how long does this take usually ?

    Please help....

    1. Solution 1 (Easy): let her come to italy on tourist visa first. Then let her get PhD or project position. Once she gets it then send her back to India to get a new Long term Study visa.

Solution 2 (time taking): You apply for Nulla osta (6 monhts). Let her come here on tourist visa for 3 months after 3 months (3+3) by the time you will have your nulla osta ready. Send her back to get family visa.

Solution 3 (complicated). let her come to italy on tourist visa first. Officially she is not allowed to convert it into family visa however there there are certain rules by which she can stay with you for long term. Contact an immigartion lawyer in italy to get that converted,

  85. Hello,
I am of Indian origin & I just completed my PhD (3 years) here in Italy. Now my professor has given me the poosibility to work for two more year as a post-doc scientist in the same lab. Back in India, I have my Mom and wife staying together. Now for me to accept the offer, I have to bring my mom and wife here in italy. But I ve two elder sisters in India who are married and well settled in India. But my Mom is not working and is dependent on me for everything as I send her the money from here once a while. So going by Italian rules is it not possible to bring my Mom (along with my wife) here in italy with me on a family reunion visa?

    1. There are some special circumstances, you need to make a case an apply as a dependent visa for your wife and your mom and wait for the embassy decision.

But these things take quite a long time, alternatively, as your contract is only for one year, you can call you mom on tourist visa for 90 days.

And obviously this letter is not mentioned in the check list provided in VFS.
